Chairman's Jury Introduction
A few years ago, sustainability was still a special subject within architectural education. Today that has changed fundamentally, dealing with energy-efficient and resource-efficient construction has become an important topic. Admittedly, not all architecture faculties attach the same importance to this. However, the entries for this award clearly show that there is a growing knowledge of sustainability. It is striking that it is not just about numbers and efficiency calculations, but that the concept of sustainability is seen much more broadly than it was many years ago. So it's not just about how much energy I use, it's about how many resources I use to create a building, how much energy and material I need to maintain a building and last but not least what happens to the building at the end of its life cycle. The question of how I manage to build long-lasting buildings, that can fulfill a wide variety of functions in the future, seems to have become an important part of the curriculum. Architecture was always a knowledge of the big picture. Communicating these broader contexts in terms of sustainable building is the major task in architectural education. The advertised prize helps to deepen this knowledge and motivate the students to pay the necessary attention to this topic.
